STORY A MONTH GOES ON...

I have decided to continue writing a Story A Month, even though I have very few subscribers. And, not all of those I did have renewed their subscriptions. I changed the price from $5.00 per year for 12 stories, to $6.00 per year. That amounts to only .50 a story, and is still a bargain. I am grateful for those few who have stayed loyal. Some tell me they have learned a great deal from reading the stories, which was my purpose from the beginning. It is difficult, sometimes, to come up with a new story each month, but I realized that if I did not continue, I would not be true to myself. This is what I do, tell stories. And, this is who I am, a storyteller. So, by writing a new story each month, I am putting my beliefs on the line. I have not flinched from this task, because I am putting my own writing principles to the test, and literally, practicing what I teach. I instruct people who have never written a story before to write a saleable short story right off the bat. I’m proud of that. But, my methods work, not only with me but with my students. So, we begin my third year of writing a story a month, and to get a jump start, I have 2 completed stories for April and May, and many ideas for others to follow. To subscribe use PayPal or send check, cash or money order to my home address at 38 Pvt Rd 52041, Pittsburg, TX 75686.

CREATIVE WRITING 101

I’ll be teaching a class this summer at Northeast Texas Community College. The classes will be held at the Hansen-Sewell Center in Pittsburg. The classroom is equipped with 20 computers and I can project onto a screen. We’ll study scenes for both novels and short stories, each write and complete a short story. Here is all the information. Space is limited. I can take more than 20 if some of you bring laptops. I’m bringing mine so that I won’t tie up one of the college’s computers. Here’s the information:

A REMARKABLE NEW ANTHOLOGY

The Northeast Texas Writers Organization, NETWO, has just released an anthology of short stories and poetry that should be of interest to every writer’s organization in America. As far as I know, nothing like it has ever appeared in print before. The anthology features the work of writers at every stage of development. Further, each contribution features a brief background bio of the writer along with the writer’s explanation of how he or she came to writing and how each writer came to write the story or poem. This gives the reader not only a glimpse into the creative process, but some idea of where writers come from and how they develop their craft. I do not have a story or poem in the anthology, which is aptly entitled THE TREASURE BOX but I did write the introduction. I wrote the intro because I believe in the project. The book is a most valuable learning tool and provides reading pleasure on several different levels. For more information, go to www.netwo.org. It’s bargain-priced and should be read and studied by every beginning or intermediate writer. This book is truly a treasure box because of its scope and depth.

NETWO WRITERS CONFERENCE

Charlotte and I will attend the writing conference this month at Camp Shiloh on Lake Bob Sandlin. This is a most beautiful setting and the conference has a great line-up of speakers, agents, publishers, and writers. For more information, visit www.netwo.org.

THE WRITING LIFE

I am working on a few projects, waiting for word on my next western novel that is sitting on an editor’s desk. I’m working on THE BARON LEGACY, #7 in the Baron Series for Forge, and a young adult fantasy I call THE EDEN TREE, and sketching in characters and settings for a more ambitious fantasy novel. I have 2 short story collections placed with an agent, along with a proposal for a mainstream romance novel featuring a divorced woman raising an autistic son. I feel passionately about this story and its subject matter. And, I love writing fantasy. But, I also have a number of western novel proposals if the market ever opens up again. And, still on deck is a private eye series set in Branson.

Until next time, keep writing. It’s a great life.
